The Yankees lost in 11 innings.
I trauma bonded with the Blackbird app and made a reservation at Crown Shy.
This is what healthy coping looks like.
Crown Shy is already on my Best Restaurants in NYC list at number two and has been there for a reason. Every single time I walk through the door of that Art Deco tower in FiDi something goes right. The room is gorgeous, the staff knows what they are doing, and the food consistently delivers without ever making you feel like you are being charged for the ambiance.
Which you are. But it is worth it.
The Space
Already posted photos so I will keep this short. Gorgeous room, modern and clean, near every train line in Lower Manhattan, and the kind of place that immediately makes a bad day feel like a slightly better one. If you need more than that you have not been paying attention.
The Drinks
Two martinis. Obviously.
Started with a classic martini because the Yankees lost and I needed something reliable. Followed it with an espresso martini because at that point I had been sitting in 90 degree heat for 11 innings and my brain had stopped making good decisions. Both were excellent. Crown Shy’s cocktail program is not a gimmick. These are genuinely well-made drinks.
The Tomato Salad (tomato carpaccio)
Summer started, which means tomato season, which means I had no choice.
Perfectly sliced tomatoes, really good parm, super fresh, and just the right amount of everything. The tomatoes were from New York. Not New Jersey. I will accept New York tomatoes. Anything else is a conversation I do not want to have.
After sitting in the sun for four hours watching the Yankees find new ways to disappoint, cold sliced tomatoes with parm was exactly what I needed. Simple. Perfect.

The Spicy Tuna
Spicy tuna, strawberries, kachori.
The presentation alone is worth ordering it. Comes out looking like a painting. Delicate, precise, and genuinely delicious. This is the kind of dish that reminds you why Crown Shy keeps a Michelin star. Everything on that plate is intentional and nothing is wasted.
The Mains
I skipped lunch because 90 degree heat and a 1 PM game do not exactly make you hungry. So by dinner I was ready.
I ordered the seared scallops and the pork katsu.
The seared scallops came in a gorgeous cream corn puree. Tender, perfectly cooked, and the puree had that sweet summer corn richness that made every bite feel like a reward for surviving the afternoon. Just awesome. This place hits the spot every single time.
The pork katsu is essentially a pork chop done at a very high level. Rich, creamy sauce with just enough tartness to cut through the fat. That balance is the whole game and Crown Shy nails it. I overate. I have zero regrets.

The Dessert That Changed Everything
I am not a dessert person. Everyone who has read this blog knows this about me.
Lennox, our server and a complete sweetheart who kept things running smoothly even when I was roughly 11 innings of sun and two martinis deep into the evening, recommended the Mango Tres Leches.
I trusted her. Good decision.
The mango tres leches was spectacular. Not too sweet, slightly tart from the mango, beautifully balanced, and the kind of dessert that makes you question your entire anti-dessert position. The mango tartness cut through everything perfectly. I cleaned the plate.
Lennox, you were right. I was wrong. This happens rarely and I want it noted publicly.
The Staff
Crown Shy’s staff is consistently one of the best in the city. Helpful, knowledgeable, and professional without being stiff. I was clearly a man who had spent 11 innings in the sun watching his team lose in extra innings and they handled that gracefully.
Lennox in particular was outstanding. She kept the whole meal on track, gave great recommendations, and was a complete sweetheart from start to finish. The kind of server that makes a great restaurant feel like a great experience.
Final Verdict
Crown Shy remains one of the best restaurants in New York City. Number two on my list and not moving anytime soon.
The tomato salad, spicy tuna, seared scallops, pork katsu, and a mango tres leches that I am still thinking about. On Blackbird, which made the whole post-loss healing process significantly more affordable.
The Yankees may have lost. Crown Shy never does.
As always, what do I know? I am just a fat guy from Brooklyn trying to survive the week, one martini at a time.
