Folk Brooklyn: When Your Foot Takes a Martini Detour
I’ve been eyeing Folk in Brooklyn for a while. It sits dangerously close to my regular walking path, which means it falls into that awkward zone: too close to Uber, far enough to make me debate cardio.
All winter I kept saying, “I’ll go next week.” Then winter did winter things. But last week? A glorious 45-degree day. Practically tropical for New York. I stepped out for “fresh air,” my left foot went one way, my right foot went another, and somehow I ended up at Folk.
Funny how that works.
The Vibe: Miami Meets Brooklyn
I walked in around 5:45 pm and the place was already packed. Always a good sign.
The space is gorgeous. Think old-school Miami tropical polish but grounded with Brooklyn edge. Clean lines, elegant but relaxed. The kind of place where you could go on a date, meet friends, or just sit at the bar pretending you walked 10 miles to justify a burger.
I grabbed a seat immediately. Staff was friendly, welcoming, and actually engaged. Bonus points: the chef-owner was there. I love when chef-owners are in the building. It just feels tighter. More intentional. More alive.
Ordering: Analysis Paralysis Strikes
I stared at the menu like it owed me money. Too many good options.
The owner came over, gave some guidance, and I settled into my usual rhythm with a slight twist:
- Caesar Salad
- Oyster Masala Latkes
- Cheeseburger
- Martinis (obviously)
- No dessert because “summer is coming.” We pretend here.
Also, slight disclaimer: I wasn’t feeling 100%. That weird seasonal bug had me sounding like I smoked five packs in one sitting. But a martini cures many things.

The Caesar Salad
Solid. Really solid.
They serve the romaine halved instead of chopped. Bold move. I respect it. They commit to it and, more importantly, provide sharp knives.
Let’s talk about that. Nothing annoys me more than trying to saw through lettuce with a butter knife. Give me a blade that works. Folk understood the assignment.
Plenty of dressing, whole anchovy fillets, and instead of standard croutons they used pita-style chips. Cool twist, great texture. I’d order it again without hesitation.
The Martinis
Banging.
Cold. Clean. Properly balanced. I kept it reasonable with two because I’m mature now. Sometimes.
If I can walk to a place, get a quality martini, and walk home… that’s neighborhood gold.
Oyster Masala Latkes
Grilled oyster mushrooms over latkes with masala and a little red caviar on top.
Really good. Like, really good.
Not quite “Mom’s cooking” good. Mom, if you’re reading this, relax. But absolutely worth ordering. Unique, flavorful, and one of those dishes you tell people about later.
If you go to Folk, get these.

The Burger
Classic cheeseburger. Well executed. Proper cook. Solid flavor.
Was it life-changing? No. Was it good? Yes.
Sometimes it’s not the burger. Sometimes it’s the mood. I’ll likely try the steak sandwich or something else next time because the menu has more personality to explore. But as first-run quality control, it passed.

Final Verdict
Folk is a strong addition to the neighborhood.
Great vibe. Friendly crowd. Chef-owner present. Good cocktails. Thoughtful menu. Easy energy.
And honestly? I’m tired of running into Manhattan for drinks. If I can get a solid martini, good food, and walk home like a civilized Brooklyn adult, that’s a win.
I’ll be back soon. Probably this month. Weather permitting. Because yes, your boy is still not paying $25 for an Uber if he can just walk it.
As always, what do I know? I’m just a fat guy from Brooklyn trying to survive the week, one martini at a time. If you want more Top 10s steakhouses, burgers, restaurants, you name it, click the words and keep going.
