For my last adventure in San Francisco, I needed somewhere to stay. I wanted a boutique hotel that was a little artsy, a little different, reasonably priced, and close to everything I planned on eating my way through.
That led me to Hotel Emblem in Union Square.
Now, I conveniently forgot one important thing about San Francisco. Everything is a hill.
Walking downhill? Great.
Walking uphill? Not cute.
But location-wise, Hotel Emblem was exactly where I needed it to be. Most of the restaurants on my list were within walking distance, and everything else was an easy ride away. You can walk to Chinatown, Union Square, the Ferry Building, and plenty of bars and restaurants without much effort.
Just remember that eventually you are going to have to walk back uphill. Gravity always collects its debt.
The hotel itself was great. The entire property has an artsy, literary-inspired design with little creative touches everywhere. It feels modern without feeling sterile. The rooms were recently renovated, nicely designed, and had plenty of space for me.
Now, to be clear, I would not book this place if I were attending a furry convention and needed room for a six-foot costume collection. But for a normal trip? Plenty of room.
One of the biggest selling points for me was something surprisingly simple.

Blue Bottle Coffee
The hotel has a Blue Bottle right in the lobby.
Some people might think that is a minor detail. Those people are wrong.
When I fly to the West Coast, my internal clock turns into a confused raccoon rummaging through a dumpster. I do not want to spend twenty minutes hunting for coffee in the morning. I want caffeine immediately. Being able to walk downstairs, grab a coffee, answer a few emails, and start my day was a huge win.
Just beyond the lobby is a comfortable lounge and bar area with plenty of seating and charging stations. It was a great place to sit down, get some work done, and plan out the next food adventure.
The Location
The location really shines. Chinatown is nearby. Union Square shopping is right around the corner. The Ferry Building is easily accessible. Even the waterfront is not too far away.
The only downside? Those hills.
Getting over to some restaurants meant climbing what felt like the north face of Everest. I do not like hills. I am fat. Hills and I have a long-standing feud.
The surrounding neighborhood had plenty of bars, restaurants, and stores. Most importantly, there was a CVS right around the corner.
Look, I am not paying six dollars for a bottle of water from a hotel minibar.
I have standards. They are low standards, but they are standards.

The Staff and Practical Details
The staff throughout my stay were friendly and helpful. Check-in was smooth, the property was clean, the Wi-Fi was fast enough for work and my nightly TikTok sessions, and everything simply worked.
For roughly $1,200 including flights from New York for a long weekend, I thought the value was excellent.

Final Verdict
Hotel Emblem was exactly what I wanted. A stylish boutique hotel in a great location without the luxury hotel price tag.
The rooms were comfortable, the location made exploring San Francisco easy, the staff were great, and having Blue Bottle Coffee downstairs every morning felt like a gift from the travel gods.
Would I stay here again? Absolutely.
Just do not ask me to walk uphill before my first coffee.
Start the food crawl right: Hamburguesa Bar was my first stop, walking distance from the hotel.
As always, what do I know? I am just a fat guy from Brooklyn trying to survive the week, one martini at a time.
