I honestly do not remember exactly how I ended up here, but I got here, so we are just going to roll with it.
I think it was a Sunday, I had some Blackbird credits burning a hole in my pocket, and I found myself at La Tête d’Or by Daniel. I have been eyeing this place for a while, but it sits in one of those weird locations for me. I do not usually find myself hanging around 23rd Street, and getting there involves enough train hopping to make me question my life choices. But I was already nearby and figured why not.
Turns out it was a pretty good decision.
The Space
The building itself is gorgeous. Everything feels fresh, polished, and expensive without being stuffy. You walk in and immediately get that modern French luxury vibe. Lots of hardwood, clean lines, and just enough elegance to remind you that you are not at your neighborhood sports bar. The space feels sexy without trying too hard.
Since I was flying solo, I grabbed a seat at the bar. No reason to occupy a two-top when my fat ass can comfortably fill one seat all by itself.
The Usual Order
As always, I started with the standard lineup.
Martini. Caesar salad. Steak tartare. Steak frites. Dessert.
Consistency is important. Science requires controls.
Caesar Salad and Steak Tartare
The Caesar salad and steak tartare arrived together, and both were excellent.
The Caesar was full of flavor, and one thing I really appreciated was that the anchovies were served on the side. Some people want all the anchovies. Some people want none. I prefer to calibrate my anchovy levels like a NASA engineer. Being able to add them as I went was a genuinely nice touch.
The steak tartare was equally impressive. Clean flavors, well-seasoned, and balanced. Nothing overly complicated, just a really good version of a classic dish.
I would happily order both again.

Steak Frites That Deliver
For the main course I went with the steak frites.
The dish features a 10 ounce tenderloin tail served with fries and au jus, and honestly, I think it is one of the better values on the menu. At around $58 it felt like a solid deal considering the quality of the meat and the overall experience.
The fries were excellent. Crispy, plentiful, and exactly what you want alongside a steak.
The tenderloin tail itself was cooked perfectly, with a beautiful sear and plenty of flavor.
Would I order it again? Absolutely.
Would I also come back specifically to try the filet mignon? Also absolutely. At some point my brain turns every restaurant visit into a research project, and now I need to know how the filet compares.

Dessert
I am not usually a dessert person, but I finished with the crème caramel.
It was excellent. The texture was smooth, rich, and comforting. Oddly enough it reminded me a little bit of a Russian honey cake in terms of overall satisfaction. Not because it tasted the same, but because it hit that same sweet spot where you immediately understand why people order it.
I cleaned the plate. That should tell you everything.

The Staff
Professional without being robotic. Friendly without trying too hard. There was just enough humor and personality to make the experience enjoyable while still maintaining that polished French dining room feel.
The bartenders knew the menu, answered questions confidently, and guided guests through dishes with the kind of detail that tells you they have actually tasted the food. Too many places train people to read descriptions. Here it felt like they actually knew what they were serving. That matters.
Final Verdict
La Tête d’Or ended up being a pleasant surprise.
The room is beautiful, the service is polished, the cocktails are solid, and the food delivers across the board. The Caesar salad, steak tartare, and steak frites were all standouts, and the crème caramel was a great way to finish.
Will I be back? Absolutely. The only thing I would change next time is ordering the filet mignon instead of the tenderloin steak frites, but that is less of a criticism and more of a personal obsession.
Sometimes curiosity wins.
As always, what do I know? I am just a fat guy from Brooklyn trying to survive the week, one martini at a time.
