Let’s get something out of the way first. I do not order salad because I enjoy vegetables. I order salad because a man my size needs fiber running through the pipes at least once a week or things get real dark real fast. That is the whole reason this list exists. Every steakhouse thinks their Caesar is the best in the city. Most of them are wrong. I have eaten through enough romaine and anchovy paste in the name of digestive responsibility to actually rank the ones worth ordering, so here we go.
1. Golden Steer
This is the standard everyone else is chasing and mostly missing. The waiter builds it tableside, right in front of you, walking through each ingredient and constructing the dressing step by step like he is defusing a bomb made of lettuce. The whole process takes about three minutes, and yes, it is theater, but it works. Crisp romaine, rich dressing, done with an actual show of craft instead of a bowl slid across the table by someone who resents you. Non-negotiable for first timers at Golden Steer. Science probably cannot explain why watching someone build a salad makes it taste better, but it is real, and I have stopped questioning it.
2. Delmonico’s
Full honesty here, I have not been back in a while, so this is not tied to a recent visit or a published post. But I remember it clearly, the way you remember an ex who was actually pretty great, you just lost touch. Little gem leaves, separated into a single layer, small pieces of anchovy on top. Simple, correct, no gimmicks, no salad going through an identity crisis. I am always straight with you guys, and this one still holds up in memory as a genuinely solid call even without a fresh visit to back it up. Delmonico’s earns its spot on my steakhouse list for more than just this, but the Caesar deserves its own moment in the sun.

3. La TĂȘte d’Or
The anchovies come served on the side here, which sounds like a small thing until you realize how much it matters. Some people want every anchovy on the plate. Some people want none. I prefer to calibrate my anchovy levels like a NASA engineer preparing for a launch, and being able to do that made this Caesar stand out. Full flavor, well balanced, exactly what a Caesar should be when it is not trying to overcompensate for something. Read the full La TĂȘte d’Or review for the rest of that meal.
4. Swoony
The Tuscan kale version, which is a genuinely different take and earns its spot for that alone. The kale never overpowers the dish, and the crispy chickpeas add texture that keeps it from feeling like something you ordered out of guilt and shame at eleven at night. Full writeup in my Swoony Carroll Gardens review.
5. CarverSteak
Small detail, huge win. They separate the leaves instead of making you hack through a half head of lettuce like you are on a survival show trying to earn your dinner. Light but punchy flavor, and the white anchovies bring the whole thing home like the last guest to show up who somehow makes the party better. Simple execution done right. Full details in my CarverSteak review.
Final Verdict
Golden Steer takes the crown for the full tableside experience, but honestly every salad on this list beats the sad, soggy pile most restaurants are still calling a Caesar with a straight face. If you find yourself at any of these five spots, order the salad. Your dinner companion will ask why you are taking pictures of lettuce, and you will not be able to explain it to them either. Just tell them it is for the fiber. It is always for the fiber.
As always, what do I know? I am just a fat guy from Brooklyn trying to survive the week, one martini at a time.
