A simple conversation with a friend somehow turned into a full debate about what The Smith actually is.
Is it a restaurant? A brunch spot? A safety net for groups who cannot agree on anything?
We landed on this. The Smith is the modern New York diner. Not the old school greasy spoon where you question your life choices at three in the morning. This is the upgraded version. Same energy, better ingredients, and you leave only slightly ashamed of yourself.
The Situation
We needed a brunch spot at 11 AM. Not a scene, not a puzzle, nothing that requires a reservation strategy like you are booking a flight to Mars. Just something open, easy, and guaranteed to make everyone happy without a group chat meltdown.
The answer came instantly. The Smith.
It is always available, always reliable, and never requires twenty minutes of “where should we go” texts that go absolutely nowhere.

The Menu
The menu is not massive, but it has enough range to keep everyone happy. Burgers, brunch classics, seafood, salads, and comfort food with a slight glow up. No analysis paralysis, no fourteen page novel of options. Just a tight lineup that hits consistently.
What We Ordered
We went with a little bit of everything, obviously.
The chips and dip is a cheesy, rich dip with blue cheese layered in and potato chips for scooping. Was it perfect? No, it could have been hotter. Did we still demolish it? Absolutely.
The Smith Burger is a thick patty with melty cheese, crispy onions, and a little sweetness from the marmalade. It does not try to reinvent anything, it just executes. Solid, dependable, no drama. It did not crack my Best Burgers in NYC list, but it earns its spot on a brunch table every single time.
The French dip is the quiet MVP of the menu. Juicy, flavorful, and built for dunking. If you do not know what to order, get this and thank yourself later.
The French toast I did not personally try, but my friend loved it, and I am trusting that review completely.
The spicy ranch fries upgrade is non negotiable. Crispy, seasoned, and worth the extra charge. This is not the moment to be financially responsible.
The Caesar salad came out with a giant crispy parm crisp sitting on top like it owns the place. Break it apart, mix it in, feel fancy for about thirty seconds. Solid Caesar, no notes, and honestly a nice change of pace from my ongoing Caesar salad grudge over at Palladino’s.

The Verdict
The Smith is not trying to be the best meal of your life. It is trying to be the place you can always count on, and it nails that. Everything lands around a seven to a seven and a half. Nothing is terrible, nothing is mind blowing, and somehow that is exactly what you want.
You can bring anyone here. No stress, no overthinking, solid food across the board, and it feels familiar every single time. You do not ask if it is amazing. You ask if it will work. The answer is always yes.
Final Thought
New York does not really do twenty four hour diners like it used to. The old school spots are fading and the late night chaos has toned down. The Smith steps in as the replacement. Not identical, but evolved. Cleaner, better ingredients, slightly more polished, but still that same energy of sit down, order something, and relax.
Would I go back? Of course. Would I overthink it? Never.
As always, what do I know? I am just a fat guy from Brooklyn trying to survive the week, one martini at a time.
