The day after the Yankees–Red Sox game, Eddie and I somehow ended up unsupervised (always a dangerous thing). This whole journey started after a round at Dead Rabbit and a quick stop at Watermark — though I won’t bother with a full write-up there since everyone already knows it’s the place to grab those giant “adult Capri Suns.” Fun? Yes. Unique? Sure. But nothing to write home about.
By late afternoon, we were wandering down from Pier 17, killing time before our dinner reservation. I wanted Eddie to see something different, something that really captured the city. That’s when we decided on Overstory, the rooftop bar perched atop 70 Pine. It’s Michelin-recognized, part of the Crown Shy group, and honestly, one of the best ways to get a full panoramic view of New York.
The Rooftop
We showed up right at opening without a reservation and lucked out. Pro tip: head to the north side, snag a table by sliding a “reserved” sign behind a menu, and you’re golden. If not, the bar is always an option. Just watch where the wind is blowing — nobody wants windburn when they’re trying to sip a cocktail.

Speaking of cocktails, the drinks were spectacular. Zero complaints there. My only gripe was the tourists — most of them stayed crammed inside, shoulder to shoulder, instead of enjoying the outdoor bar with its unmatched views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and New Jersey. Why settle for a curtain photo when you could actually experience the city skyline?
Our side quest was exactly what it needed to be: chill drinks, killer views, and good conversation. Eventually, we made our way to the Bleecker Hotel bar to cool off before dinner. It was relaxed, comfortable, and perfect for Eddie to soak in even more of the city. Sometimes you need a detour, and sometimes the detour ends up being the best part of the journey.

Banana Juice Theory
Life’s best moments aren’t always on the main path — sometimes they’re in the side quests. Like banana juice, which isn’t on the menu everywhere, these hidden detours can be the sweetest surprise of all. Overstory was our banana juice: unexpected, refreshing, and exactly what we needed to keep the adventure rolling.
